Central Chiapas, Highlands, and The Lacandon forest
This tour begins in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of the state and home to the spectacular Sumidero Canyon, one of the premier birding hotspots in southern Mexico.
From there, we travel to San Cristóbal de las Casas in the central highlands, where we will also visit the scenic Lagos de Montebello National Park, famous for its beautiful lakes and panoramic viewpoints.
The tour then descends into the tropical lowlands, exploring ecolodges and pristine rainforest habitats within the core region of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve. Along the way, we will visit some of the most remarkable Maya archaeological sites in Mexico, including Yaxchilán, Bonampak, and Palenque. The itinerary also includes visits to traditional Maya-Lacandon communities such as Lacanjá and Nahá, offering a unique combination of birding, wildlife, culture, and history.
